De weersverwachting: Wind 4 Bft NW, kans op veel regen en 14° Celsius
Hoewel het weken, zelfs maanden mooi weer geweest is, is er vandaag een omslag in het weer. We laten ons er niet door beïnvloeden en verzamelen rond negen uur bij de club. We laden de kano’s op een karretje en verlaten om half tien het pand. Aan de overkant bij de steiger demonteren we de karretjes en deze gaan ingeklapt mee de kano in. Een mooi systeem en het werkt perfect.
Het water staat hoog en we moeten een vijftal bruggen onderdoor om bij het Mr U.G. Schilthuis over te kunnen stappen. Twee bruggen zijn wel heel erg laag. Mike hangt scheef aan mijn kano en zo kunnen we er net onderdoor. De steiger waar we uitstappen staat een flink aantal centimeters onderwater en is glad. Gelukkig gaat er niemand onderuit.
We steken het Oostplein over om bij de Boerengatkade weer het water in te gaan.
Jan meldt ons aan bij de Verkeerspost Sector Maasbruggen via marifoon en Mike dringt erop aan om met zijn vieren bij elkaar te blijven voor de veiligheid, maar eigenlijk bedoelt hij natuurlijk gezelligheid.
Zodra we onder de Boerengatbrug uitkomen hebben we een prachtig uitzicht op het Noordereiland. Susanne, Jan en Mike zijn al eerder op de Nieuwe Maas geweest, maar voor mij is het de eerste keer. De oversteek via de punt van het Noordereiland naar de Nassauhaven begint met klotsende golven aan alle kanten. Daarna wordt het rustiger. We varen met de stroom en de wind mee onderlangs het eiland van Brienenoord. Er is weinig vrachtvervoer op het water. Wat een rust!
De combinatie van de stad en haar natuur vormt een geweldig decor onderweg.
We varen door tot waar de Nieuwe Maas overgaat in de Noord en de Lek. Hier steken we over en via Bakkerskil varen we weer terug, maar niet voordat we geluncht hebben op de Kleine Zaag, midden in de natuur. Met poncho’s, regenbroeken en zitlappen hebben we in de regen onze boterhammen opgegeten. Een korte pauze, want anders koelen we te hard af.
Dus weer verder, met stroming mee maar wind tegen en met steeds meer regen door de Sliksloot naar de Sliksloothaven. Ondertussen maken we een groepsfoto in de stromende regen met de Algerabrug op de achtergrond.
We varen een klein stukje op de Hollandsche IJssel om vervolgens weer de Nieuwe Maas op te gaan. Vanaf hier voel je de stroming goed. Het laatste stuk naar het Boerengat gaan we nog een keer door de golven en aangezien we al een flink aantal kilometers achter de rug hebben vond ik dit het meest pittige stukje van de tocht.
Met de kano’s op de karretjes lopen we terug over het Oostplein, dit keer met meer bekijks.
De waterstand is gelukkig gezakt en moeiteloos varen we onder de bruggen terug meteen de sluis in.
Na 26,5 kilometer in- en ontspanning zijn we om 15:20 terug bij de club, moe maar zeer voldaan.
Maas Bridges Tour (18 Sep 2022)

The weather forecast: Wind 4 Bft NW, chance of a lot of rain and 14° Celsius
Although the weather has been nice for weeks, even months, today the weather has changed. We don’t let it affect us and gather at the club around nine o’clock. We load the kayaks on trolleys and leave the club at half past nine. On the other side at the jetty we dismantle the trolleys and pack them into the kayaks. A nice system and it works perfectly.
The water is high and we have to go under five bridges to reach the Mr U.G. Schilthuis to be able to portage. Two bridges are very low. Mike hangs sideways on my kayak and we can just pass under it. The jetty where we get out is quite a few centimeters underwater and is slippery. Fortunately no one falls.
We cross the Oostplein to enter the water again at the Boerengatkade.
Jan reports us to the Maasbruggen Sector Traffic Post via mariphone and Mike insists that the four of us stay together for safety, but of course he means fun.
As soon as we come out under the Boerengatbrug we have a beautiful view of the Noordereiland. Susanne, Jan and Mike have been on the Nieuwe Maas before, but for me it is the first time. The crossing via the tip of the Noordereiland to the Nassauhaven starts with sloshing waves on all sides. Then it gets gentler. We sail with the current and the wind below the island of Brienenoord. There is little freight transport on the water. What a rest!
The combination of the city and its nature forms a great backdrop along the way.
We paddle on to where the Nieuwe Maas changes into the Noord and the Lek. Here we cross over and via Bakkerskil we paddle back, but not before we have lunch on the Kleine Zaag, in the middle of nature. We ate our sandwiches in the rain, wearing ponchos, rain pants and seat pads. A short break, otherwise we will cool down too much.
So on again, now with the current but against the wind and with more and more rain through the Sliksloot to the Sliksloothaven. There we take a group photo in the pouring rain with the Algera Bridge in the background.
We paddle a short distance on the Hollandsche IJssel and then go down the Nieuwe Maas again. From here you can feel the current well. The last part to the Boerengat we go through the waves again and since we have already covered quite a few kilometers I experienced this as the most challenging part of the trip.
With the kayaks on the trolleys we walk back across the Oostplein, this time with more curious spectators.
Fortunately, the water level has dropped and we effortlessly sail back under the bridges straight into the lock.
After 26.5 kilometers of effort and recreation we are back at the club at 15:20, tired but very satisfied.
